Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure.

Language

Official Languages: Sinhala and Tamil.

English: Commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and businesses.

Cuisine

Sri Lankan cuisine is flavorful and spice-centric. Key dishes include:

Rice & Curry: Traditional meals with a variety of curries.

Kottu Roti: Stir-fried flatbread with vegetables or meat.

Hoppers: Pancake-like dish, often served with egg or curry.

How to Reach

By Air

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): The primary international gateway to Sri Lanka is located in Katunayake, about 35 km from Colombo. It receives flights from major cities around the world.

SriLankan Airlines: The national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, offers direct flights to and from several countries. Many international airlines, such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Air India, also operate regular flights to Colombo.

International Airports: There are a few other airports, such as Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI) in the south, which can also be accessed, but Bandaranaike International is the main hub for international flights.

By Sea

While international cruises may occasionally dock in Sri Lanka, sea travel is not a common method for reaching the island. However, cruise ships from various regions sometimes stop at Colombo port.

By Land

From India: There is no direct land connection between Sri Lanka and India. However, there is a ferry service that operates between the southern Indian port of Tuticorin and Sri Lanka’s northern port of Colombo (this service can sometimes be intermittent).

By Road: While it's possible to reach India by land (from Sri Lanka), the main route is by air.

Best Time to Visit

Western and Southern Coasts (Colombo, Galle, Bentota, Mirissa, etc.)

Best Time: December to March

This period is the dry season for the western and southern parts of Sri Lanka, making it ideal for beach activities, sightseeing, and exploring coastal towns. You can enjoy sunny weather and clear skies during these months.

Hill Country (Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Ella, etc.)

Best Time: December to April

The hill country is cooler and more pleasant during these months, making it perfect for hiking, tea plantation tours, and enjoying the breathtaking views of mountains and valleys. This is also the best time to visit cities like Kandy for cultural and historical experiences.

Eastern Coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, etc.)

Best Time: April to September

The dry season on the eastern coast makes it an ideal time for visiting the beaches, such as those in Trincomalee and Arugam Bay. This is also a great time for water sports and diving due to calm seas.

Yala National Park & Other Wildlife Areas

Best Time: February to October

The dry season from February to October is the best time to visit Yala National Park for safaris, as animals tend to gather around water sources. The reduced rain makes wildlife spotting easier, and you have the best chances to see leopards, elephants, and other wildlife.

Overall Best Time for a Complete Tour of Sri Lanka

Best Time: December to March

If you're planning to visit both coastal areas and the hill country, this is the most favorable period for a comprehensive Sri Lanka experience. Most regions will have pleasant weather, making it ideal for exploring the island’s diverse attractions.
